The ultimate guide to

Finding the best fixed spread brokers for you

What is the spread in forex?

Forex brokers normally quote two different prices for currency pairs: the bid (buy) and ask (sell) price. The difference between these two prices is known as the spread. Generally speaking, the spread is how “no commission” brokers make their money. Instead of charging separate fees for making trades, the cost is built into the buy and sell price of the forex pair you want to trade.

How is the spread in forex measured?

The spread is usually measured in pips, which is the smallest unit of price movement of a traded asset. For most currency pairs, one pip is equal to 0.0001. An example of a 4 pip spread for EUR/GPB would be 1.2339/1.2335. However, currency pairs involving the japanese yen are quoted to only 2 decimal places – an example of a USD/JPY quotes would be 109.53/109.45. The example quote indicates an 8 pip spread.

What types of spreads are in forex?

The type of spreads seen on a forex platform is determined by the structure of business offered by the forex broker. There are two types of spreads:

  • Fixed

  • Variable (sometimes referred to as ‘floating’)

Fixed spreads are usually offered by brokers that operate a market maker model of business while variable spreads are offered by brokers operating a non-dealing desk model of brokerage business.

What are fixed spreads in forex?

Fixed spreads stay the same irrespective of what market conditions are at play at any given time. In other words, conditions of slippage or intense volatility do not affect a fixed spread. Fixed spreads are seen with brokers that offer the market maker business model.

With this model, the broker buys off large positions from the liquidity providers and offers these positions in smaller chunks to traders using a dealing desk. Thus, the market maker acts as the counterparty to the trade. In this manner, the broker is able to offer fixed spreads to its clients because they are able to control what is offered to these traders using the dealing desk.

What are the benefits of a fixed spread broker?

Fixed spreads have smaller capital requirements, so trading with variable spreads requires a lot of liquidity which many retail traders cannot afford. Therefore, fixed spreads offer a viable and cheaper alternative.

Trading with fixed spreads also enables better trade planning. This is because traders are always sure of what they can expect to pay when they execute a trade. If you are a scalper, then the fixed spread is for you. Scalping involves taking very small profits in many trades within a day. Obviously, the spread will impact on any profits made, so scalpers will be better served using fixed spreads.

What are the disadvantages of a fixed spread broker?

Requotes are very common with fixed spread arrangements since pricing is coming from just one source. There will always be times when pricing moves very fast as a result of supply-demand dynamics. With no room for spread adjustment to accommodate these movements, the broker has no option but to ask the trader to accept a new entry price provided for the trade.

Slippage can be another huge problem. When prices are moving fast, the ability of the broker to offer a fixed spread is compromised and the price fill may end up being far worse than if a widened variable spread was use. Because fixed spreads are only possible because the broker’s dealing desk is controlling the order flows and execution prices, you may find the concept of trading with fixed spreads not very attractive.

Fixed vs variable spreads: which is better?

The question of which is a better option between fixed and variable spreads depends on the situation of each individual trader. There are traders who will find the use of fixed spreads more advantageous than using variable spread brokers. However, the reverse can also be the true for other traders. Generally speaking, traders with smaller accounts and fewer monthly trades will benefit from fixed spread pricing.

What are the different types of fixed spread traders?

Scalpers
those who get in and out of the market very quickly, multiple times a day and just take a few pips at a time generally prefer trading with fixed spread brokers. However, there is a caveat that a broker offering wide fixed spreads may not be the best fit.

News traders
traders who trade the news could benefit from using fixed spreads. Some traders have complained of spreads widening to as high as 50 pips during news trades with variable spread brokers, therefore choosing a broker with the fixed spreads brokers could prevent this.

Micro accounts traders
low-frequency traders and those with smaller deposits using micro accounts could be better off with fixed spread brokers. You will not pay extra commissions (just the spread as discussed above) on trades, unlike with variable spread brokers who charge commissions on each side (buy and sell) of trades.

  • Fixed spreads has smaller capital requirements. Trading with variable spreads requires a lot of liquidity which many retail traders cannot afford, so fixed spreads offer a viable and cheaper alternative.

  • Trading with fixed spreads also enables better trade planning. This is because traders are always sure of what they can expect to pay when they execute a trade.

  • If you are a scalper, then the fixed spread is for you. Scalping involves taking very small profits in many trades within a day. Obviously, the spread will impact on any profits made, so scalpers will be better served using fixed spreads.

Nadelen van een vaste marge makelaar

  • Requotes are very common with fixed spread arrangements, since pricing is coming from just one source. There will always be times when pricing moves very fast as a result of supply-demand dynamics. With no room for spread adjustment to accommodate these movements, the broker has no option but to ask the trader to accept a new entry price provided for the trade.

  • Slippage is another huge problem. When prices are moving fast, the ability of the broker to offer a fixed spread is compromised and the price fill may end up being far worse that if a widened variable spread was use.

  • Because fixed spreads are only possible because the broker’s dealing desk is controlling the order flows and execution prices, you may find the concept of trading with fixed spreads not very attractive.

The forex market operates on the basis of supply and demand as is the case with other financial markets. For example, if the demand for dollars is high, the currency’s value against others will go up. It is precisely on this basis that forex spreads are worked out.

The spread is the difference between the price the forex broker pays to buy a currency from you and the price at which the broker sells it. For example, the spread for a position wherein the base currency is the U.S. Dollar will always be less compared to the spread offered on a less common currency. This is because the demand for dollars is very high.

best trusted stock brokers

The broker can easily sell off the dollars they buy. Therefore, they do not have to charge you for the same by giving a higher spread. It is for this reason it is recommended that you avoid buying/selling currencies for which the demand is lower. It will cost you much more due to the higher spread.

In the forex market, brokers offer two different types of spreads. These are the fixed and variable or floating spreads. The latter type varies depending on market behavior, while the fixed spreads remain the same even during news releases.

Fixed spreads are often wider compared to the floating spreads. In general, they range between 2 and 3 pips. Variable spreads widen significantly at the time of major events and news releases. This is to say that fixed spreads offer you a great deal of predictability and protects you from spread swings. Fixed spreads come in handy when scalping or trading news releases. It is a fact that spreads swings help you to make some additional profits, but they can catch you unprepared and cause a great deal of loss st times.

Another benefit offered by fixed spreads is that it makes it easier for you to apply trading bots and automated trading strategies. Further, fixed spreads offer some amount of transparency. However, you must bear in mind the fact that only market makers would guarantee fixed spreads.

What is spread

The spread when you are engaged in forex trading is very simply the difference between the bid and the ask prices of a forex currency pair or another trading market. This spread is sometimes the way in which almost all of the top forex brokers make a marginal profit through having their own small markup, although they remain as competitive as possible.

What does fixed spread mean?

Thinking about the spread in forex, you will typically encounter 2 types. Fixed spreads, and variable or floating spreads. The latter of these is usually more common and means that the spread can change (or float/vary) depending on the demand or volatility of a market. As mentioned above, this can provide some opportunity for a broker markup.

Fixed spreads on the other hand, as the name would imply, do not move. These are set by the broker and will almost never change, at least not in any short frame of time. Brokers who used fixed spreads can also be termed as a market maker broker.

Floating spread vs fixed spreads

Looking at the spread in forex from a trader perspective, you may wonder which one is best as a forex trader. This simply depends on the market and on the moment. Some may say that floating spreads tend to be averagely lower, although this is not always the case and the fact they can change does provide you as a forex trader with some level of unpredictability. If you’re interested in trading with extremely low floating spreads rather than fixed ones, check our top 10 featuring the forex brokers with the lowest spread.

Many in the forex trading industry like to eliminate this uncertainty and so they choose to deal with what may be a marginally higher fixed spread but they can understand the exact cost of their trade with ease.

With that said, when choosing a market maker broker for forex trading, you are relying a lot on the integrity and reputation of that broker to set the fixed spread in a fair and reasonable manner. Thus, you should always try to go with a very well-regulated broker like all that we have listed above. If you can do this, then in the long-term, depending on your forex trading style and the movements of the market itself, you may well find that you can save money and trade in a more economical manner with the fixed spread in place.

Fixed spread forex brokers

The trading cost always is the key feature to any trader or investor, as by the end of the day a significant amount can be paid just for the difference between the sell and buy price. It is a fact that typically the trading costs charged by the broker are built into a difference between the price for a particular instrument or more known as a spread.

  • Initially, there are known two types of spread offering, which is either the fixed spread or the variable or floating one.

The fixed spread, as its obvious from the name, is fixed to the particular charge, which remains the same under any market conditions, throughout liquidity or volatility. This model brings a stable trading environment and makes it a way easier to predict or calculate the total trading cost.

  • Fixed spreads usually offer a wider cost, as the broker should include into the proposal all risks, rather than the floating spread that changes according to the market conditions.

  • Nevertheless, there are many strategies which demanding, in particular, the fixed spread due to its nature and is a necessary demand within the long-term traders or the beginning ones.

Important to note that it is common the fixed spread forex brokers are operating as OTC or market makers in order to provide the liquidity. Most often reputable and well-regulated companies offering fixed spread to the potential benefit of their traders. Yet, always consider only sharply authorized brokers as the risk to fall under the fraud through a non-regulated brokerage offering fixed spread opportunity is extremely high due to its loose of obligations towards any laws.

VFSC forex brokers with the fixed spread

Fixed spread brings about an unparalleled advantage that can't be found in its more mainstream counterpart: stability in an ever-changing market that is the foreign exchange. If you are looking for a trading condition where the spread is not easily swayed by the volatility change in the market, fixed spread forex brokers may be the correct answer.

This list compiles some forex brokers offering fixed spread that can be put on your watchlist. More importantly, these brokers are regulated by VFSC who allows flexible trading conditions so you can expect little to no restrictions when it comes to trying out new strategies.

What is a low spread in forex?

Spreads are considered to be low when they are below the average on that market. Many may start at 1 pip, although on some more traded markets this could be less, while on other markets like commodities, it could be much higher.

Are low spreads worth it?

Sure. Since a spread is effectively a commission from the broker, then a lower spread is always better. It can also be very necessary if you want to employ trading techniques such as scalping.

With that said, while a lower spread is always better, just make sure you examine the broker offering closely to avoid any other types of commission in place of a spread.

How are forex spreads calculated?

You will very often hear mention of spread in forex, and it is a key figure in determining your trading cost. The spread is the difference between the bid/sell prices of an asset. This price difference is calculated in another common term you will often hear referenced, pip. This stands for percentage in points and typically when trading forex, 1 pip is a 1 point movement in market value based on the fourth decimal place of your currency pair in most cases including the USD.

For example in case of EUR/USD:

Bid/ask of 1.08335/1.08340 (0.5 pips spread)

Bid/ask of 1.08335/1.08345 (1 pip spread)

Bid/ask of 1.08335/1.08485 (5 pips spread)

One of the only exceptions among the major currency pairs are the JPY forex pairs (such as the USD/JPY) which is measured to 2 decimal places instead of four, so where 1 pip would be 0.0001 for the EUR/USD, it is 0.01 for the USD/JPY

Forex spreads and commissions per lot: what you should expect?

In many cases, where you may see a regulated forex broker offering a 0 pips spread, what they are in fact offering, is a spread that starts from 0 pips. This is still excellent although you should be prepared for it to vary depending on the volume, and volatility of the forex market at any given time. This does mean that it could sometimes be significantly higher so it is something to look out for.

Since the spread is the main revenue for a broker, you should also take care to note any commission that may apply to low spread, or zero spread trading. If such commission does apply, this will typically be calculated on a per lot ($100,000) of currency traded basis and is usually below $5 depending on the market.

How to estimate forex trading fees when opening a trade

Choosing a forex broker with the best spreads to offer you is one thing, but you also need to consider, and be able to estimate how much this spread is actually going to cost you. Also even though a broker may have the lowest forex spreads, you should also be mindful of any commission which is in place.

Let’s take a closer look at exactly how you can calculate both of these easily:

Forex spread

So, let’s take an example. The lowest spread forex broker you can find is offering a spread of 0.1 pips. This number translated onto a currency pair price would take effect as 0.00001.

This means that you could be looking at a situation for example, where the bid/ask would look something like, 1.08335/1.08336.

Here you can see the 0.1 pip spread has moved the ask price up to 1.08336. With a higher spread, of course this price will climb further in the same way.

Translating this number into an actual percentage, and real cash value shows us just how small it really is. In this example case, a 0.1 pip spread is equal to just 0.00092% (0.00001 / ask price), or $0.92 per standard lot traded.

Forex commission per lot

Another point you need to consider when looking at forex brokers with low spreads and low deposit minimums, is to double check any commission per lot charges they have in place.

This typical commission charge, even for brokers with the lowest forex spreads, is usually around $7 per lot. Using this as our benchmark, it means that if you open a position for 0.5 standard lots, you will have a commission of $3.50 on opening. This is one way to charge the fee which is sometimes referred to as “per-side, per lot” commission.

In other cases with some brokers you may see commission written as “round turn”. In these cases, a round turn commission of $7 means $3.50 on opening of the trade, and $3.50 on closing. These are important details since you need to check beyond just the lowest forex spreads with all brokers.

Best low spread broker for scalpers

Finding the lowest spread forex broker is great for many. For many though, such as day trading forex traders like scalpers, a forex broker with low spreads, and low commissions is not quite enough.

Scalpers will ideally prefer forex brokers with low spreads and low deposit of course, but they will also need fast order execution, and the ability to harness leverage to make money with their style of trading which relies on a high number of trades.

With that in mind, you should remember that within the EU and UK, the highest leverage available to retail traders from any regulated forex broker is 30:1. Among these brokers, one regulated forex broker offering high leverage is IC markets.

They, along with some others that we have mentioned in our high leverage forex brokers top 10, can offer 500:1 leverage to some traders outside the EU and UK. There is also a higher leverage available from many who also provide the lowest forex spreads if you are a professional trader in the UK or EU.

There are many good brokers for scalping, and one of them is vantagefx. An australian firm regulated worldwide, which is also one of the best canadian forex brokers.

Which broker offers the lowest forex commissions per lot?

Finally, as we mentioned, already, it may not be enough to just select the broker with best spreads. Let’s take a look then at a top broker choice with the lowest forex trading commission.

This broker is FXTM with their ECN account. This account charges traders just a $4 round turn commission. As explained in our example above, this means you pay a $2 commission on opening, and a $2 commission on closing a trade. This is great value in the industry.

They are also a top choice when it comes to providing the lowest forex spreads. These start from only 0.1 pips which is very competitive. Again, the trusted MT4 and MT5 platforms are available for you to trade with, and the minimum deposit on this account type is $500.

Forex brokers with zero pips spread: which is the best one?

If you are looking for the best broker with a truly real zero spread that is fixed, then the FBS fixed zero spread account type may be perfect for you. This remains fixed at 0 pips spread and does not increase though it is available only under IFSC regulation in belize, and so, not accessible to europeans regulated within europe. The only downside of this account type, is the huge $20 commission per lot traded.

Forex broker with the lowest fixed spread

Of course, we are all looking for the broker with the best spreads possible on the market. When it comes to the broker offering the lowest fixed spread in the market currently, that is avatrade. They offer CFD trading on forex from a fixed spread of 0.9 pips with no commissions per lot at all to worry about. If you check our example above, you will see just how good a deal this is.

You can open a forex trading account here with a minimum deposit starting at only $100. This is a great combination then from avatrade being one of the forex brokers with low spreads, and low deposit minimum that you can choose from.

They also make available a great range of the top forex trading platforms including both MT4 and MT5. For more in-depth on this broker, and more great choices with the lowest forex spreads, check our top 10 brokers with the lowest fixed spread.
